Our Roads
The Westside has grown rapidly in the past few years and continues to do so. Unfortunately, our roads have not been able to keep pace with the rapid growth. Roads have been an issue for 20 years; I remember bumper stickers reading “Montano Now” and “Paseo Now”. Only recently have we had a four lane Montano bridge and construction for the Paseo del Norte extension. Twenty years is a long time to wait! I am running to be your State Legislator to make sure we do not have to wait another 20 years to have the Unser Blvd. extension completed.
While walking in Ventana Ranch neighborhood a number of community members commented on their frustration with congested roads and how it took them 20 minutes just to get on Paseo del Norte from Rainbow. Similar frustrations are shared by community members who live in the southern part of the district when getting on to Interstate 40 from Unser Blvd. There is no simple solution when it comes to roads in our community especially when dealing with numerous governmental agencies in the State, County, and City. We need to work with all stakeholders in developing a smarter transportation both across the river and within the Westside. We also must take into consideration the importance of timely completion of road construction and work to make our streets safe, especially with heavy traffic going through our neighborhoods, like Irving does in Paradise Hills. Finally, we need to look to the future and address traffic issues today before they become bigger problems tomorrow!
Unlike our current representation I will represent your concerns of roads and transportation. I will vote to ensure funding for not only roads in our district but across the State, such as demonstrated in House Bill 833 and Governor Richardson’s Investment Partnership I & II (GRIP). We can credit GRIP for the success of Coors/I-40, however, had the legislation authorizing GRIP II been passed we would have seen added improvements for the Westside and all of Bernalillo County. It is time to have a State Legislator who is responsive to the issues of the Westside and will work with you in addressing them.

Ground Breaking for the New Northwest High School

Thursday, 14 September 2006- During a late morning ceremony at the site of the new Northwest High School, many gathered to witness the ground breaking of the city's first high school in over twenty years.
Those in attendance were joyous that action is being taken, but were still aware that much work still needs to be done in regards to our school system. Cheryl Jorgensen, an active parent and member of the Bubble Gum Brigade was shocked to have not seen Antonio's opponent for the State House present at the ceremony. Many folks were disappointed and commented on the lack of responsiveness from their elected official on an issue as important as the construction of new schools.
