Antonio on the Issues:

New Mexico’s 29th District is changing; its representation in Santa Fe is not. It is disappointing to note that the same issues we are facing today were the same issues 20 years ago, namely schools, roads, and our quality of life. It is time for a change and its time to have a State Legislator that is responsive and represents the new energy of the growing Westside. I am the candidate that will work with you to find solutions that work for our community and our State.

Our Schools

LBJ Middle SchoolGrowing up on the Westside it was not uncommon to be bused across the river to attend school. The friends I had in my Paradise Hills neighborhood had no middle school to attend and only one elementary school. The normal progression of schools was to first attended Sierra Vista Elementary, then Taylor Middle School and eventually on to Cibola High School, which at the time was busting at the seams. This was all before Rio Rancho started its own school district which meant Rio Rancho students were attending already over crowed schools. Westside schools were overcrowded then just as they are today! Twenty years – nothing has changed! Help me change this by being your voice in Santa Fe.

Our Roads

RoadsThe Westside has grown rapidly in the past few years and continues to do so. Unfortunately, our roads have not been able to keep pace with the rapid growth. Roads have been an issue for 20 years; I remember bumper stickers reading “Montano Now” and “Paseo Now”. Only recently have we had a four lane Montano bridge and construction for the Paseo del Norte extension. Twenty years is a long time to wait! I am running to be your State Legislator to make sure we do not have to wait another 20 years to have the Unser Blvd. extension completed.

Our Quality of Life

Little LeagueThe Westside is growing, changing, and evolving. During this period of growth we need to be responsive and adaptive to our quality of life. We have too few parks, too few libraries, and too few resources. I will introduce legislation that protects homeowners and holds community management companies accountable. New Mexico currently does not have any laws in place that directly affects this issue. As our community changes so must our representation in Santa Fe.

Ground Breaking for the New Northwest High School

Thursday, 14 September 2006- During a late morning ceremony at the site of the new Northwest High School, many gathered to witness the ground breaking of the city's first high school in over twenty years.

Those in attendance were joyous that action is being taken, but were still aware that much work still needs to be done in regards to our school system. Cheryl Jorgensen, an active parent and member of the Bubble Gum Brigade was shocked to have not seen Antonio's opponent for the State House present at the ceremony. Many folks were disappointed and commented on the lack of responsiveness from their elected official on an issue as important as the construction of new schools.
